Photographs can help explain an incident, but your safety and medical needs come first. Photograph only what you can access safely and lawfully. You do not need every image on this list to ask about a claim.

Scene and surroundings

  • A wide view showing where the incident happened.
  • Relevant lanes, markings, intersections, entrances or walkways.
  • Traffic controls, signs, lighting and visibility conditions.
  • The condition you believe contributed, shown close up and in context.
  • Nearby businesses or cameras that an attorney may want to identify.

Vehicles, bicycles or equipment

  • Overall position and visible damage from several angles, when safe.
  • Contact points, detached pieces and damaged belongings.
  • Identifying information such as a plate, rental identifier or model label, when safely available.
  • The condition before repairs, disposal or return to a rental provider, if practical.

Injuries and recovery

  • Visible injuries, if you are comfortable documenting them.
  • Changes over time, with dates noted accurately.
  • Relevant damaged clothing or protective equipment.

Keep the original files

  • Keep originals with their dates and available file information.
  • Back up the files in a place you can access later.
  • Label your notes without altering the original image.
  • Ask your attorney how to share and preserve the records. Do not post them publicly simply to document a claim.
